Our Work
Mentorship And General Support
Our primary focus is improving women and girls lives through supporting them in their academics and general life. We also provide financial support to some of the girls from underprivileged families to help them get basic needs and stay in school. In addition, we keep close track of their school performance and provide mentorship.
We organize Awareness talks/Seminars where we reach out to girls, particularly those in urban slums and remote areas in Uganda; and discuss a wide range of day-to-day life issues ranging from sexual reproductive health to women’s rights and career prospects.
We believe that social-related issues are equally important as they are highly coupled with academic performance and hence we cannot turn a blind eye to them. Most of the girls come from deeply conservative communities where the most crucial biological stages, such as the menstrual cycle and puberty are never discussed.
Caring For Girls With Special Needs
In Uganda, and many parts of the world, individuals with special needs are considered a curse, unwanted, unloved, and often abandoned. We
want to restore their value and share with the world the infinite worth of each individual! We aspire to build a home and a safe place for abandoned, neglected and abused individuals with special needs
Health Education in Schools
Groom a Girl has done a lot of health and empowerment projects in schools around the central and Northern regions of Uganda targeting girls in schools.
Currently, we have a total of 140+ secondary schools where we have reached out with the aim of improving their health and empowering them to make informed decisions as we believe that when you empower a girl, you empower a nation.
While in schools we focus on the following;
- Health Education about prevention, management, causative agents, mechanisms, and control against different infections.
- Sexual reproductive and health rights.
- Empowerment against misconceptions, bad decision-making, and peer influence.
- One-on-one medical consultations and Counselling.
Ladies Clubs
Groom a girl has ‘Ladies Clubs’ where ladies meet regularly with a common goal or cause. They consist of women, young mothers, and grandparents.
We make preparations as our target group to run a health education and empowerment program and we believe that a healthy wife makes up a healthy family. We discuss the following;
1. Sexual reproductive and health rights.
2. Personal and environmental hygiene, family planning, antenatal care.
3. Prevention of Infection.
4. Medical consultations
5. Women’s rights
